Kathleen Burke Barry, CPA

 
Kathy, who specializes in audits of manufacturers and non-profit organizations, is the Director of Technical Services and the Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee at Dermody, Burke & Brown. She has been with DB&B since graduating from St. John Fisher College with a BS in Accounting in 1987. In 1990, Kathy became a Certified Public Accountant. She is a member of the NYSSPA and the AICPA.

John Burke, CPA

 
Jack has been part of Dermody, Burke & Brown for more than 25 years and currently serves on the Executive Committee. He holds a BA in History from Syracuse University (1972) and an MS in Accounting from Niagara University (1974). Jack is currently an audit partner at DB&B. His wide range of specialties includes retail and wholesale companies, manufacturing, not-for-profits and service organizations. He is a member of the NYSSCPA and AICPA, and a former member of the NYSSCPA Board of Directors and Ethics Committee, as well as a former adjunct faculty member at Le Moyne College.

Robert T. Cherry, CPA

 
Bob has been with Dermody, Burke & Brown for more than 20 years and leads the firm's privately held business niche. He is a 1984 graduate of Le Moyne College (BS, Accounting). Bob's areas of expertise include profitability enhancement, cost containment, capital acquisition financing, working capital financing, cash management, acquisition/sale of businesses, succession/exit planning, tax planning, building family businesses. He is a member of the AICPA and NYSSCPA, as well as the Associated Builders and Contractors, Construction Financial Management Association, and Home Builders Association.

David J. de Silva, CPA

 
David has over twenty-six years experience providing accounting, auditing and consulting services to a wide range of not-for-profit organizations. He currently leads DB&B’s Not-for-Profit Specialty Niche that currently serves over 200 organizations in Upstate Central New York. David is a graduate of Le Moyne College. He is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). David received the AICPA certificate of achievement in governmental and nonprofit accounting and auditing. He is also a member of the PKF North American Network Not-for-Profit Committee.

David provides professional services to a variety of not-for-profit organizations, including fine arts, foundations, human service providers, and health care organizations and facilities. He has extensive experience in consulting and advising his clients on a variety of issues, including internal control analysis and recommendations.

He is a former board member and treasurer of ProLiteracy Worldwide that has over 100 partners in more than 60 countries around the world. David also serves as a board member of the New York State Board for Public Accountancy, which advises on licensing requirements, licensing examinations and practice issues, and board members participate in licensure disciplinary and/or restoration and moral character proceedings. Additionally, he is a past board member and finance committee chairman for the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and is also an active member of the Syracuse Rotary and its related Foundation. David is married and has one daughter. In his free time, he enjoys golf, canoeing, camping and reading.

Brian R. DuMond, CPA

 
Brian has been with Dermody, Burke & Brown since 1986 and currently serves on the Executive Committee. He is a graduate of Le Moyne College and a member of the NYSSCPA and AICPA.

Brian has 18 years of school district auditing experience and is a speaker at various school district functions including the Association of School Board’s training of new board members. In addition, he leads the Firm's Risk Management Niche and his clients include health care, governmental and not-for-profit organizations, as well as savings institutions. He specializes in audits, internal control studies, operational reviews, and cash flow analyses. Brian has experience in Medicaid, CFRs, OMB Circular A-133, and DHCR.

Brian and his wife, Paula, enjoy following Syracuse University football and basketball.

Leonard E. Gerber, CPA/ABV, CVA

 
Leonard received his B.S. in accounting from Syracuse University. He has completed the educational and experience requirements to earn the professional designation of CVA, Certified Valuation Analyst, from the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. In addition, he has also completed the educational and experience requirements to earn the designation of ABV, Accredited in Business Valuation, from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Leonard specializes in providing litigation support for matrimonial proceedings. He has been retained to provide valuation services and tax advice in litigated matrimonial proceedings, the divorce mediation process and the collaborative law process. In addition, Leonard has prepared numerous business valuations for estate and gift tax purposes.

Leonard has lectured for both the New York State Bar Association and the Onondaga County Bar Association, as well as for the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation and the National Business Institute. He is married with three sons and enjoys golf.

Jo Ann Golden, CPA

 
Jo Ann Golden is the partner in charge of the Utica Regional Office of Dermody, Burke & Brown, CPAs, LLC. Working with a diverse client base, she provides auditing, attest and tax services to numerous clients. She is a member of the firm’s Quality Assurance Committee. Jo Ann was President of the 30,000 member New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants in 2002-2003, having previously served as a director and officer for nearly seven years. She has been a trainer in Ethics Updates for the State Society. She is a past president of the Foundation for Accounting Education and is a former member of the Governing Council of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Jo Ann has served on numerous community Boards and is currently the Treasurer of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York, a Trustee and past president of the Utica Public Library and serves on the Board of the Mid-York Library System. She is a past director and treasurer of the United Way of Greater Utica and currently chairs its Audit Committee. She is a Trustee of Utica College and chairs its Audit Committee.

Jo Ann serves on the Board of Directors of a publicly traded company is a member of its Audit Committee.

William J. Harmatuk, CPA

 
William J. Harmatuk joins Dermody, Burke & Brown with 20 years of public accounting experience. He is a graduate of Syracuse University. Bill has extensive accounting and tax experience with corporations, Subchapter “S” corporations, partnerships and individuals. Bill concentrates his practice in the areas of accounting, auditing, tax compliance and planning, and business consulting with service organizations, assisted living and adult care facilities, not-for-profits, and closely held businesses.

Bill is a past President of the Syracuse Chapter of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), and past President, Treasurer and finance committee member of the Food Bank of Central New York. Bill is a member of the NYSSCPA and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Madelyn H. Hornstein, CPA

 
Madelyn has been with Dermody, Burke & Brown since 1983 and serves as the firm’s Chief Executive Officer. Madelyn focuses on setting the company’s future course through strategic growth, ensuring continued client success, and maintaining the personal relationships so vital to a successful firm. Madelyn also heads DB&B's Employee Benefits division. She and her team provide design, set-up and on-going administration of retirement plans. She ensures that the plans are compliant and also consults on a variety of employee benefit issues and individual retirement planning. Madelyn is a graduate of SUNY Cortland and holds an MBA from Syracuse University. Madelyn is a member of the AICPA, NYSSCPA and the Women Presidents’ Organization. She serves on the Executive Committee for Dermody, Burke and Brown, and is the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee of the Central New York Community Foundation.

William J. Killory, CPA

 
Bill Killory has been with Dermody, Burke & Brown since 1990 and serves as the firm’s Chief Financial Officer, a function that includes directing the company’s financial functions as well as analyzing current and future business operations. Bill also leads Dermody, Burke & Brown's tax department. Bill began his career with Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young) where his time was divided evenly between audit and taxation services for a wide variety of businesses. Following Ernst, he worked as a financial analyst for a publicly traded leasing company, developed financing sources for a large retail mall developer and served as group controller for a $100 million sales organization. Bill launched DB&B's health care practice in 1991 and has been involved in practice start-ups, mergers and a wide variety of financial and organizational issues that affect medical practices. As a tax partner at Dermody, Burke & Brown, Bill has a diversified background in taxation including financial institutions, professional service firms and consolidating entities. Bill is a graduate of Syracuse University and is a member of the AICPA, NYSSCPA, and Dermody, Burke & Brown’s Executive Committee.

Karen Matticio, CPA

Karen currently leads DB&B’s Medical Management Services Niche. She has been with DB&B since graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1990. Karen has over 18 years of consulting, accounting, tax, and audit experience and provides professional services to a variety of physician and dental practices. Karen is a member of the AICPA, NYSSCPA and a member of the New York Medical Group Management Association.

Shannon Nelson, CPA

Shannon joined Dermody, Burke & Brown as a staff accountant in 1989. Shannon provides auditing services to school districts, not-for-profit and health care organizations. She is a graduate of St. John Fisher College and is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Shannon has served on the board of the Carol Baldwin Breast Cancer Foundation and has been a supporter and advocate of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Shannon is married, has one son and three daughters, and resides in Camillus, New York.

Kurt K. Ohliger, Jr., CPA

 
Kurt K. Ohliger, Jr., comes to Dermody, Burke & Brown with over 20 years of public accounting experience with KPMG providing comprehensive federal, state and international tax services to both public and private, closely-held entities.

Kurt provides tax services to clients in a wide variety of industries, specifically manufacturing, industrial and consumer markets. Kurt is a 1986 graduate of Le Moyne College and is a member of the New York State Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs.

Jill S.G. Palmeter, CPA

 
Jill has been with DB&B since 1990. She is a graduate of State University of New York at Oswego and received a Masters of Science from Oregon State University. Jill specializes in the audits of not-for-profit organizations and is currently one of the two Not-for-Profit Niche leaders within the firm, charged with the administration of the firm's Not-for-Profit seminars attended by clients and non-clients alike.

Jill has spoken on the topic of Mission-Based Management and Board Governance at seminars for our current and prospective not-for-profit clients, and currently serves as a board member and treasurer, respectively, of two local not-for-profit organizations, and on the audit committee of a third. Jill is a member of the AICPA and NYSSCPA.

Carolyn S. Sturick, CPA

 
Carolyn has been with Dermody, Burke & Brown since 1989 and serves as the firm’s Chief Operating Officer. Carolyn focuses on client service and satisfaction. She ensures the smooth operation of daily firm business including meeting deadlines, setting performance goals for employees and assessing and implementing operating policies for the firm.  She performs audits, accounting and consulting services to a wide range of clients, including a varied background in governmental and not-for-profit auditing. She is a member of the firm’s Quality Assurance Committee and is involved in the development of the curriculum for new staff hires and continuing education. Carolyn also serves as Treasurer of a local not-for-profit organization, East Syracuse Minoa Education Foundation, and has many years of involvement in the Festival of Races.

John joined Dermody, Burke & Brown in 1988 and has more than 25 years experience in both industry and public accounting. John holds a BS in Accounting from St. John Fisher College (1977). Prior to joining the firm, John was the CFO of a large industrial contracting company based in Syracuse, NY. John's clients include primarily contractors, service organizations and employee benefit funds.
